Post Started to learn whistle at music school

Hi,
yesterday I started learn to play whistle at music school. As beginner. At first hour, when we tried cut's, tap's and roll's, we've got a homework - to learn tune "Oh, Those Britches Full Of Stitches".
I have to practice, because this is awful (mainly part "A c#e"): http://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/oh-those-britches-full-of

Only good thing I had, that I at least learned sequence of notes.

EDIT:

... can you share your notation @ http://www.my-music-community.net/forum I would like to learn to play this.

Hi again,
I try to continue with this blog like thread 🙂

This week teacher make decision we skip learning cuts & taps and we'll begin to learn tune with rolls (just because roll is cut & tap together).
So homework for this week is reel The Green Mountain. I hope I'll put some recordings later because it seems too hard (and fast) for me.

(Hmm, forum redirects to activity page also in smartphone 🙁 )

EDIT: My teacher prefers learning by ear, so notation for this tune is not available (BTW. It slightly differs from notations I've found on Internet).
I tried to write it, but ... I don't know notes and notation (incl. ABC notation) so don't laugh me, please. This is whole tune:

T: The Green Mountain
R:reel
M:C|
K:D
A~F3 AFEF|D~F3 ABde|~f3d efdB|Adfd efdB|

|:f~a3 bafe|f2af efde|~f3d efdB|Adfd efde|
f~a3 bafe|f2af efde|~f3d efdB| AFEF D3z:|

EDIT3: "Preview" of whole tune: http://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/the-green-mountain
EDIT4: Corrected ABC notation (probably not perfect, but better than previous version).

Oh, I forgot to say that this week is a tune "Garret Barry's" as a homework. I forgot, because I was busy when I tried to remember this tune. Today is first time when I played it all at once. Here is this tune: http://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/garret-barrys

Thank you. I thought that it can be usable for someone, so I just reporting what we learning at school :-).
Anyway, last few weeks I missed to add some tunes here:

(it is simpler version than you can find elsewhere. Tripple "AAA"s should be rolls on A. I don't know how to write in ABC, because when I wrote it as "~A" it sounds horrible. And original ABC sheet, which I modified to this version, had these triple "AAA")

Kmarty, your recording are very well done and a good speed for me to use as reference. Could you make your music files on Sound Cloud so they can down loaded. I would like to keep them for reference when when I practice off-line away from computer.

Thanks

Last week we got two tunes as a homework. Two, because they are similar and often are played together in one set:

1. Road to Lisdoonvarna http://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/road-to-lisdoonvarna

T: The Road To Lisdoonvarna
M: 12/8
L: 1/8
R: slide
K: Edor

 |:e2f gfe d2B Bcd|c2A ABc d2B B3 |e2f gfe d2B Bcd|1cdc B2A B2E E2B:|2cdc B2A B2E E3 |]

2. O'Keefes slide http://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/okeefes-slide

T: O'Keefe's slide
M: 12/8
L: 1/8
R: slide
K: Edor
D|:E2B B2A FEF A2F|E2B B2A F2D DEF|E2B B2A FEF A3 |1FEF A2B F2E E2D:|2FEF A2B F2E E2A|]

I'm sorry if notation is not accurate. As I said many times before, I don't know notes and these tunes was learned by ear.
I'm also not sure if it is "Edor" nor 12/8.

Errata: Between "E2B" in both tunes should be a tonguing to avoid whining (Shorten "E2" to "E", tongue and/or breath and followed by "B").
But in notation it is "E2B".

BTW. This is the first tune I had to write ABC notation as first and then learn it. Because I easily jumped to another part of tune due its same or very similar bars.

... and this week was Ashplant reel.
But there is something ... I really don't know :-/. I have to ask my teacher, so this is just for info. For now.
https://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/ashplant-reel

T: The Ashplant Reel

(I don't know if ABC notation is correct because EasyABC have problem with triplets (it doesn't sound like triplets). So I can't check whether it sounds how it should - I don't know notes, I writing ABC by chance and using EasyABC to replay and this replay I check by ears, not the notes or ABC notation. For ABC corrections, I using abc2midi as "spellchecker" - it prints many warnings like "Warning in line 8 : Bar 5 has 5 units instead of 4" which helps me to fit notes into bars)

Kmarty, thanks for your continued diligence to updating this blog thread it's really great. You've got me interested in EasyABC and one thing I've noticed is that I have to include an X:### field for my Easy ABC to display the music notation for example

T:Morrison's Jig
X:001
M:6/8
L:1/8
R:Jig
K:D
D|:~E3 BEB|E{D}EB AFD|~E3 BEB|dcB AFD|
   ~E3 BEB|E{D}EB AFD|~G3 FGA|1BAG FED:|2dAG FGA|
|Bee fee|aee fed|Bee fee|fag fed|
 Bee fee|aee fed|gfe d2 A|BAG FED|
 Bee fee|aee fed|Bee fee|faf def|
g2 g gfe|def g2 d|edc d2 A|BAG FED|E4||

Without this X:### field Easy ABC doesn't display the notation, the value of the x:### is not important for display but it must have one. The end user can use the X:### field to catalog his/her tunes 😀

Some notes I made for clarification regarding Easy ABC notating nomenclature.

The "X:" field is mandatory in every application which uses abc file as "playbook" (i.e. it contain more than one tune in abc file).
Everyone can use own numbering so I skipping this field when doing copy&paste here.
The "X:" field should be as first. EasyAbc can help you and if you start writing "X:" it automatically include next number.
For example, in my ABC file is header of this tune:

X:14
T:Morrison's Jig
M:6/8
L:1/8
Q:160
%Q:100
R:Jig
K:D clef=treble+8
...

(I have "clef=treble+8" in "K:" field because it should be played an octave higher)

Rolls: Yes, this "~E3" is roll.

Cuts: No, this "{D}E" is tap (little note is note below). If it was cut, it would be "{A}E". Choose whatever you want, but my teacher (and me too) plays tap here.

Triplets: If it was triplets, it would be written as "(3BAG (3FED" (Note the little "3" above these notes) and this doesn't sound as it should. Triplet is shorter (every note in triplet have 2/3 length of non-triplet note).

Thank you for the clarification you would make a good teacher. I typed the code you provided into Easy ABC and I could see the program starting to work for me it's a very nice way to create and work at music very intuitive and like the Title Easy ABC 🙂

Morrison's Jig again.

In previous recording (and abc notation too) are some mistakes (actually it is not mistake only by me. Although I did at least one mistake too), my teacher did some ... "inaccuracy"(? - I don't know how to call it) ... but after a week she wanted to play a bit different:
https://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/morrisons-jig-again

T:Morrison's Jig
M:6/8
L:1/8
R:Jig
K:D
D|:~E3 BEB|E{D}EB AFD|~E3 BEB|dcB AFD|

 Bee fee|aee fed|gfe d2 A|BAG FGA|
 Bee fee|aee fed|Bee fee|faf def|
g2 g gfe|def g2 d|edc d2 A|BAG FED|E2||

Just for interest - When I trying to record a tune, I play it few times and then I trying to choose the best. So it could look like this:

(the fourth is the "chosen one" here 🙂 )

Thanks for the update on Morrison's Jig and the new tune Maggie In The Woods. The method you record by is the same as myself. I make many recordings and pick the best 😀

I like that you included the slow version of Maggie in the woods it also really shows your great progress being able to keep the rhythm/ sound essence of the tune whether it is played fast or slow.

Maggie in the woods is simple tune, but still can make difficult situations. For me, the part "B/A/G/A/" limits how fast I can play it and also catching the right breath points on whole tune makes me some difficulties.

I don't know how to say, but there is only one roll (~g3), everything else which sounds like roll (moreless 🙂 ), is actually tap&cut (like "reversed" roll). i.e. "Bee edB" is "Be{d}e {a}edB" and "eaa age" is "ea{g}a {c}age".

Rests (the "z"'s) are probably not in real notation. First should be perhaps not "gze" but "g2e" and second is probably not "ezA" but "ecA". I heard it always with rests in these places. At "fff" I always heard rolled "f3".

This week we've got a tune, which is well known to members of "The Compare and Learn Challenge" (actually, I forgot it in the meantime, so I had to learn it again), a jig Saddle the Pony:

The part "GG G2" is played as "reversed" roll.

first of all;
nice thread, its interesting to follow your experiance of learning in a shool with a teacher

second; i noticed that i never made a comment in this thread, actualy no one but jleo did - what a pitty
i can just talk for myself but i do apreciate your sharing, but my problem is i still dont know to read abc tabs 😉
but i will learn it and than your thread will be full of nice tunes to learn

last but not least
; your new recording of "saddle the pony" is nice - its maybe the first time that i really liked those cuts (or are it rolls or,...?), i never was a friend of them but here they fit, or its because you know to play them well now? i cant say but i can say that i like it (you should post this recording to the challenge thread as well - if its a new one)
and that makes me remember that i still have to do a recording of it - i never learned the second part 🙁 but i will, i promise

first of all;

Thank you 🙂

second; - comments

I don't demand comments, but ... yes, sometime it could be helpful to inform if I should continue 🙂

second; - abc

I'm not good at abc notation too. But tunes can be shareable better on abc than classic notes. I use EasyABC which operates with abc and can show you also classic notes and it can play tunes.
And abc tabs I share because I don't think I play good enough to learn tune just by ear (although all of them I learned it by ear).

last but not least;

I think that cuts, taps, rolls, slides ... are integral part of this kind of music and I'm trying to learn it well (it is a bit long-term challenge to me 🙂 ).
This recording of "Saddle the pony" is new, but I don't post it to the challenge thread. The previous recording belonged to challenge thread and this recording gelongs to this thread.

yes please continue, i believe this thread is interesting for many visitors
we are (still) a very smal group so comments are (still) rare, even if its interesting

you are right about cuts and co nd maybe i just have to get used to it, or its normal that beginners ornamations are not that much likeable 😉
i DO belive its good that you learn and practise them
i am not that far yet 😉

oh not to forget, yes i will learn to read abc, i just didnt find the time yet
but when i have learned it i will have a resource of many nice tunes here in your thread

You don't need to learn ABC notation, there are many applications that could read ABC and show you as classic notes.
Learning ABC is useful only if you want to write in ABC.
Of course, you can read ABC well and read it directly instead of generating classic notes.

thats beautifull, i can imagine the butterfly flying when i hear that
this is an example where i really like the ornaments, maybe because they fit to the tune so good, or because you finaly become good at it, i cant say
anyway i am impressed that you learn one tune per week, do you remember them all, i mean can you play them all out of memory or forget them quick again?

(Strange, forum didn't send notification by e-mail)

Maybe it is just an accident. The tune should be played faster and I didn't imagine anything with butterflies. Maybe because I saw this video :-): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFOzHU7otGI#t=112s
I don't have this kind of imagination.

Actually I can learn a tune for less than two days. But next approx five days are critical - I have to play it at least these days otherwise I forget it (I often ends with I can't remember begin of yesterday-learned tune). The more days I play it, the longer I remember it. Fortunately I remember all tunes in this thread yet :-). But it is due to playing them again and again all time than I can remember it forever (which I don't).
Maybe you were surprised how much helps me recording these tunes to post them here - it takes several recordings until I have something what I can place here.

Anyway, next week is here and next tune too 🙂 (BTW. I played it whole just yesterday. As almost all tunes I recorded here)

you are fast
in the beginning, one year ago, i did learn very fast, i think, but those were easy tunes
a half year later, i did remember every tune i learned because i did play them all every day
since i started with the guitar again i played first, no whistle at all, than a little bit and now daily again but not that much ... and i learn slow now, maybe because the tunes arfe more difficult, maybe because i learn severa tunes at the same time on 2 instruments, maybe because i am ill ... i nearly dont sleep and when i sleep it has no quality, i am always very tired and cant concentrate ...
anyway, for example greensleeves, i startet in february and play every day and now, finaly, i can play it by memory, without need to look at notation, on whistle and guitar
but i still need time to find out how i want to play it, it just starts n ow that i get a real good feeling for the tune and know between what i need to decide ....
the easy tunes i learned first when i did beginn, i still can play them, but not all by memory, i need to look at notation here and there, and the feeling for the tunes, knowing or feeling where to pronounce it more or less, is gone ... but anyway i have a "matschkopf" as i say in german, "muddhead" in english ... because of my illness

About remembering tunes: I can't judge it, but I can't receive tunes (or music at all) in any different way than by ears.
If I got a notes or tablature I can (with a lot of time) read what notes are in, but I can't transfer it on instrument. I simply need to hear it.
My wife used to play piano and she can read notes on the fly. But she can't play by memory.
The same is with one whistle student I know from "intermediate" class (I'm in "beginner" class). She knows read notes on the fly, she can immediately play any tune even she didn't play/hear it before, but she can't play by memory too.

It sounds me like people who play tunes from notes can't play it by memory. Like they didn't know what they playing(?). I just guessing. I can't compare it, because I'm on the other side (no problem to play by memory*, but impossible to play by notes 🙂 ).

*) Moreless. I know people who can play everything although they heard it just once. That's not my case :-).

omg i still cant play saddle the pony, i even have a print of the notation sticked to the wall, in front of me but ... i dont know, that tune and me,.. we need some more time 😉

about rememebring and reading notation or playing by ears
i can read "dots" just very slowly one by one, not fluent
i cant play from sheet, just easy tunes, but when i leaqrned to play them by memory, than i cant play by notation anymore, not from tabs, numbers, dots, whatever, once i have a tune in my head, i cant read it anymore while playing ... so maybe i am more one of the "by ear people" but the problem is, i cant play by ear ... yet...just one tune, "brother jakob" i played it in my first weeks without even thinking about ... just like that
but everything else i try to play by ear....wont work, maybe i should practise that more, i give up quickly than

anyway i want to be able to read and play from notation, not only dots, also tabs, abc,...
and i want to be able to play by ear too
i have to learn and practise much more
....now, since i stoped working, cause of my health problems, i have a lot of time, but i cant concentrate for long....thats my problem with all right now
anyway i will keep on making music, i am even thinking about getting a piano as well 😉
if i ever become good at any instrument ... who knows, but i know i want to

2Whistler: Thank you 🙂

2German-Whistler: The best is to know both, by ear and by notes, of course. But it seems I'm not able to learn it play by notes well. So I'm using the only way I can - by ear.

Yesterday I tried completely new reverb settings (from the opposite side - the reverb is very, very little) and tried to record a reel set.
Unfortunatelly it took about two hours (there was loads of mistakes such as playing different tone than it should and so on - set is unbelievable long to record it w/o mistakes :-)) and it still doesn't sound as I wish so better is to criticize just the reverb settings:

Hi,
next year is here and I'm continuing to learn play whistle.
This year I am assigned to class with intermediate student (intermediate is meant here like "more than absolute beginner" - there is only two levels, beginners and everyone else). The other student knows some tunes, including tunes for beginners, which I don't so I have to learn them. That's my start of this whistle year.

So first one is Boys of Bluehill: https://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/boys-of-bluehill

You mean when I started this thread (i.e. Sep 2012)? Yes, it started at beginner level.
But tempo (how often a new tunes to be learnt) is based on students tempo. It mostly took a tune per week, but sometimes it has longer period.

The "e2dg2de2-" part is hard to me due its timing. I don't remember if I ever learned tune with metronome. If not, this is first.

I'm sorry I didn't post it earlier, but I have a bad news (quite old news). The music school I visited was closed for school year 2014/2015 due to low participation (we were just three students on whole school, each on different level).
I'm trying to learn itself now, of course, but at this moment I'm struggling with embouchure so no recordings yet.

Learning tunes is not problem.
But I was sick about a month and couldn't play flute and now I have feeling like I lost a half year of training and I can't find what I'm doing wrong with embouchure. So I'm trying to find out a good tone than learning new tunes.
