Post Recording Software & Compressing files to mp3

I have a nice USB Microphone a Blue Yeti, bought it for Podcast and my Professional Photography Tutorial Videos when i have to speak from "the off"
It works well for that. I recorded with the videoediting software and the files were good for this.

But now since i want to record my whistle playing i am still happy with the Mic but not with the software.
I want a good audio recording software.
I also want to edit my soundfiles, maybe adding some echo or reverb, or mixing guitar and whistle lines, ....whatever.

Untill now i did record my whistle audiofiles with a free software called "Music Editor free" it works well so far, i can edit a little bit BUT i can not convert the produced .wav files into .mp3 and i dont want to upload always enormous files when a compromised file sounds same good.
So i did get a free mp3 converter but it just did work for some fes days for testing.
Remember my upload of the first challenge "the star of the county down"? did it when i was short on time and just then the converter stoped working.
So i downloaded Audacity which was recomended to me by Kmarty. But Audacity did need a add on or something like that to work.
The download and install of that did terrible things to my Computer, i had add ons in all my browsers which i didnt want, i had new starting pages and was lead to stupid search engines and strange websites.
And all that in the night before my operation when i was short on time and wanted to upload a mp3 for the challenge.
At last i did give up and deleted audacity and all its strange companions.

Ok lets make it short:
I need a good recording software. I wand to edit my files and i want to convert them into whatever i may need.
I would like something free but i also would buy something what is realy good and recomendable.
Who knows something about recordings?
Who can recommend something?

Sorry about that. I'm Linux/OS X user and I never had problem with Audacity.

I tried it under vmware (where I have MS Win as virtual machine) and:
I don't know what you downloaded, but what you need as add-on is just one DLL file. It is installed into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lame For Audacity" and nowhere else. After you install this, Audacity can export audio as mp3. It doesn't add any addon to any browser.
Required files for MS win:
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/audacity-win-2.0.2.exe
http://lame1.buanzo.com.ar/Lame_v3.99.3_for_Windows.exe (or, if you don't trust installer, use this http://lame1.buanzo.com.ar/libmp3lame-win-3.98.2.zip and extract lame_enc.dll into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lame For Audacity")

-------------

If I recording on computer, I use Audacity (with LAME mp3 library for export to mp3 capability). Record, normalize (I'm not sure if I should, I did it because if I didn't, high tones are too loud and graph shows that it is saturated. Maybe I should use another filter, compressor, I don't know), sometime I used reverb (last month didn't :-)) and then export as mp3. That's all.

Yes "Lame" that was the thing i had to install and which install diverse other things without asking, i was so surprised that even my security programm didnt get alarmed

i may give it another chance and do it slowly step by step but what you did say "....high tones are too loud and graph shows that it is saturated...." doenst make me trust that software more

i know audacity is well known and used by many people but i would prefere something more professional and even buy something if there is something really good someone can recomend

That's not software related, that's what whistle do by nature - high tones are much louder than low tones.
My original thought was make it both, high and low tones, to the (almost) same level before I created mp3.
For example Star of the County Down was created in audacity, normalized and uploaded to SoundCloud http://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/star-of-the-county-down-1st
and Down by the Sally Garden was directly sent to the SoundCloud http://soundcloud.com/kmartycz/down-by-the-sally-garden.

I'm not professional sound maker so it is possible I'm doing it wrong and use something else (compressor?) or maybe I should leave it as is.

we have to and will find out how to do it at best 😉

i think for now, as beginners, all is needed is that our files dont become to big so downloads and listening will be easy for everyone from everywhere

thats why i also thought about it again and decided not to buy a software now which will be much to overstated for me yet

so i did just get another free converter for to convert my .wav files into .mp3
and what did happen? as usual when getting free software (somehow its never free) my firefox had a new startingpage and something wanted to change my default settings for searchengines 😉

anyway i can record well and convert now, well enough for my needs
later i may give audacity another try or buy software when i need it

If startpage changes in your browser itself, you probably have completely different problem than "free software".
Search well, especially when you attaching properties to something which doesn't have it.

Maybe we have language barrier, but it is really not usual what happens with your computer.
